With two years left in his current City Council term, Lafayette Mayor JD Mangat announced he will step down from the council in early December and will not seek another term as mayor.

Mangat was appointed to the council in 2018, replacing another council member amid a vacancy process. He was elected in 2019 and chosen as mayor in 2021, becoming the youngest mayor in Lafayette history. He was reelected in 2023 for another four-year term on council.

In Lafayette, the mayor is selected by the council for two-year terms rather than being chosen by voters. The council serves as Lafayette’s legislative body, providing policy direction for city governance through the city administrator.
