An attack on a group of children at a park in suburban Skokie was classified as a hate crime, law enforcement said Friday.

Several Jewish kids between the ages of 12 and 15 years old were hanging out in Shawnee Park at approximately 6 p.m. on Oct. 7 when another group of kids and teens started yelling anti-Semitic slurs, authorities said.

Police said those kids chased the Jewish children and shot at them with a "gel blaster" toy pellet gun. One child was struck in the leg, law enforcement said.

Authorities have identified the minor who fired the pellet gun, but aren't revealing more information, citing the ages of those involved.

Police said Illinois law requires a restorative justice approach to cases involving minors.
