Perth Zoo's last remaining tiger, a rare Sumatran tiger called Jaya, has died after a seven-year battle with cancer.
Jaya had been given just nine months to live after being diagnosed with an ectopic thyroid carcinoma in 2018 and having a tumour removed.
Perth zoo keepers said they noticed Jaya behaving "abnormally" this week, before he was transferred to the zoo's veterinary hospital.
After a physical exam, the zoo concluded he would no longer be able to experience an acceptable quality of life and euthanised him in the interests of his welfare and dignity, it said.
Jaya was born at the zoo in 2008, through its regionally coordinated breeding program.
The zoo said it had no plans to house more tigers at the site in the near future.
