Mayor Daniel Lurie announced Thursday that President Donald Trump has agreed to call off a “federal deployment” in San Francisco.
The announcement came less than 24 hours after it was first reported that federal agents were dispatched to Coast Guard Base Alameda in preparation for a potentially sweeping immigration-enforcement operation.
In a statement Thursday morning and at a noon press conference, Lurie said he spoke with Trump by phone Wednesday night and reassured the president that San Francisco is making progress in lowering crime rates and stimulating its economic recovery.
Lurie said in the press conference that “the president told me clearly that he was calling off any plans for a federal surge in San Francisco.”
