SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Volunteers are stepping in to ensure that their local outdoor landmarks are protected during the government shutdown.

As the federal government shutdown continues, thousands of federal workers are set to miss their first full paycheck on Friday after the Senate was unable to pass a bill that would provide pay for federal employees.

With many federal employees furloughed, some Utah volunteers are taking it upon themselves to protect archaeological sites during the shutdown.

Since October 1, when the shutdown began, volunteers in Grand County have been at trailheads helping to protect archaeological resources, while many federal staff remain off the job.

Zion National Park is one of the locations still open, thanks to nearly $8,000 a day in state funding.
