Jammu & Kashmir: According to Hindu tradition, the Surya Shashti fast is observed on the sixth day (Shashti) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Kartik.
Mahant Rohit Shastri, President of Shri Kailakh Jyotish and Vedic Sansthan Trust, explained that this festival is known by various names — such as Chhath Puja, Chhath, Chhathi Maiya Puja, Chhath Parv, Dala Puja, and Surya Shashti Vrat.
On this day, devotees worship Goddess Chhathi Maiya, believed to be Usha, the wife of Lord Surya (the Sun God). Since “Shashti” is a feminine form, she is lovingly called Chhathi Maiya.
According to the Puranas, worshipping the Sun God on this day holds great significance.
