PORTLAND, Ore. – The Trump administration clarified its plans to deploy National Guard troops in Portland, announcing a reduction in the number of troops initially planned for deployment.
An attorney for the Trump administration informed a federal judge that approximately 200 National Guard troops will be deployed to Portland. This number is significantly less than the up to 800 troops that were originally authorized.
The statement was made during a court hearing addressing whether a judge should lift a restraining order blocking the deployment. The Justice Department emphasized that 200 troops is the “right and appropriate number.”
Oregon officials have requested the courts maintain the restraining order until appeals are resolved, citing unresolved key issues.
