In a bizarre incident that has sent ripples through the university town of Kalyani in Nadia district, police on Friday detained a vagrant after hundreds of voter identity cards were found stuffed inside his bag. The discovery — made in the busy Majherchar area under Ward No. 7 of the Kalyani Municipality — has sparked a storm of political controversy and speculation about the authenticity and origin of the recovered cards.

According to local sources, two residents noticed a suspicious-looking man loitering near Majherchar in the afternoon. When they questioned him, his nervous demeanour aroused further doubt.
