Each time I read these words, I am reminded of growing up just outside Berkeley, California, in the 1960s and 1970s. Activists, such as militant Vietnam Veterans Against the War members, and even some of our teachers, urged us students to take the AC Transit bus to Oakland Army Base. We were told to spit through the chain-link fence at soldiers returning from Vietnam, and call them “baby killers,” etc. I cannot discern any difference in vitriol between “baby killers” and “extremists” or “Nazis.” Words may be different, but the intent to delegitimize and destroy basic human respe
