HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii Police Department is offering over $197,000 a year in its job listing for a new police chief.

The county said the chief of police is responsible for preservation of the public peace, prevention of crime, detection, and arrest of offenders against the law, protection of the rights of persons and property, and enforcement and prevention of violations of all laws of the state and ordinances of the county.

The position was vacated by former Hawaii Island police chief Ben Moszkowicz, who applied to head the Honolulu Police Department . However, Rade Vanic was selected by the Honolulu Police Commission as interim chief.

Moszkowicz tried to withdraw his resignation , but the County of Hawaii Police Commission denied the removal. Reed Mahuna is currently
