Prashant Bankar, a key suspect in the suicide case of a 28-year-old woman doctor from Maharashtra, has been arrested by the Phaltan police. The arrest took place in Pune, and Bankar is set to be presented in court today. The woman, who worked at a government hospital in Phaltan, left a note on her palm naming two individuals, including Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne, who is currently absconding.
Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi confirmed the arrest and stated that a case has been registered against both men under charges of rape and abetment to suicide. The police are actively searching for Badne, who has also been suspended from duty.
The woman doctor was found dead in a hotel room, and her note accused Badne of repeated rape and Bankar of mental harassment. Reports indicate that Bankar had a five-month relationship with the doctor, which had deteriorated.
Family members of the deceased have alleged that she faced significant political and police pressure related to her work, particularly regarding mortuary reports. One cousin expressed the need for justice, stating, "There was a lot of police and political pressure on her to make wrong mortem reports. She tried to complain about it. My sister should get justice."
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has condemned the incident, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation. They expressed deep concern over the tragic death of Dr. Sampada Mundhe, highlighting the impact of her loss on the medical community across India. FAIMA stated, "Her untimely demise has deeply shaken the entire medical fraternity across the nation."
