SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) -- The reported warnings for Syracuse’s new School Zone Traffic Enforcement program have already decreased by nearly 40%, a major drop considering that the automated speed and red light cameras sent out nearly 60,000 warnings in the first two weeks of the program.

Currently, the number of warnings is down to nearly 35,000 in the second two-week period. Nearly 20% of the warnings for speeding warnings were over 15 miles above the speed limit.

Speeders are getting warnings as of now, though starting on Nov. 2 those violations come with a $50 fine.

The city said that the highest recorded speed in a 20 mph zone was 64. The driver was going 44 miles per hour over the speed limit near Dr. Weeks Elementary School, and another time near PSLA at Fowler.
