In July 1984, Terry Wallis was 19 years old and living in rural Arkansas when his life changed forever. While driving with friends, he was involved in a serious car accident. The crash left him with devastating brain injuries. Doctors placed him on life support and soon determined that he had entered a coma. Although he eventually stabilized enough to breathe without machines, his condition was classified as a minimally conscious state, sometimes mistaken for a persistent vegetative state. He showed only limited, inconsistent responses. His family was warned that his chances for meaningful recovery were very slim.
