Young children are swallowing nicotine pouches at an increasing rate, prompting a warning from a Michigan health system.
Ingesting small quantities of nicotine can cause nausea, vomiting and increased heart rate for small children, explained Dr. Adnan Sabic, an emergency medicine physician at Henry Ford Health’s St. John Hospital.
High concentrations of nicotine can result in more serious complications for children, including respiratory failure, seizures, and death.
“The vast majority of these presentations are very mild symptoms,” Sabic said. “We all know nicotine is addictive and obviously on a small body it can be particularly dangerous. Their organs have not fully developed and so it takes much less nicotine for them to overdose.”
