Calgary has a new city council and mayor. Very new. Ten out of 14 freshly elected councillors are rookies, either political party candidates or independents.

Their previous experience includes working at the University of Calgary, CEO of an energy company, marketing specialist, criminal defence layer and construction project manager, among others.

Each have their own reasons for endeavouring to enter the blood-sport of municipal politics. And with an important job ahead, they deserve the chance to prove themselves to Calgarians.

Yet, one of the first things I read about them is that they are not diverse enough. That the fact that 12 out of 14 councillors are men, mostly white, is something we should all lament.
