A serious car crash on the M4 has caused significant delays this afternoon, with only one lane remaining open near Junction 18 westbound. The incident, which occurred shortly after midday, has compounded existing traffic disruptions due to planned roadworks for the new A432 Badminton Road Bridge between Bristol and Bath.
Avon and Somerset Police reported that the driver involved in the crash attempted to flee the scene on foot after failing to heed the hard closure in place for the roadworks. A police spokesperson stated, "We were called at 12.15pm after an incident on the M4 westbound near junction 18 this afternoon. It was reported that the driver failed to observe the hard closure in place for roadworks and their vehicle a short time later had left the carriageway."
The police quickly initiated a search for the driver, which was supported by the National Police Air Service. The driver was located and subsequently arrested on suspicion of a driving offence. Authorities confirmed that he is being taken to hospital for a medical check-up.
The crash has led to extensive queues on the motorway, with recovery operations expected to take place throughout the afternoon. Police have urged motorists to remain patient as they work to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow.
This incident highlights the importance of adhering to road closures, especially during ongoing construction work, to ensure the safety of all road users.
