The Truckee River Flood Management Authority voted unanimously to approve a plan to add lacrosse and soccer fields to the Rock/McCarran Flood Project near the Truckee River and south of Mill Street.
The fields will include paths for running, walking and biking.
Under the plan, about 50 acres of the 168-acre area to the south of the Truckee River along Mill Street from Rock Boulevard to McCarran will be used for athletic fields as well as flood mitigation.
The area will be home to 11 grass fields, which could also be used for flag football.
Justin Cutler, president of the High Sierra Lacrosse Association, said the Reno Youth Sports Association would likely manage the fields and handle upkeep and mowing.
