The New York City Department of Sanitation has begun hiring emergency snow shovelers for the 2025-2026 winter season .

Shovelers are per-diem workers tasked with removing snow and ice from crosswalks, bus stops, fire hydrants and step streets in the wake of a heavy snowfall event.

Those recruited start with an hourly pay of $19.14. After 40 hours are worked in a week, that pay jumps up to $28.71 per hour.

In order to apply for a snow shoveler position, you must be at least 18 years of age, be eligible to work in the U.S., and be capable of performing heavy physical labor.

Applicants must bring two small photos (1½ square), original and copy of two forms of identification and their Social Security card at the time of registration.
