Donald Trump will not ‘waste’ time meeting Vladimir Putin unless it was clear that the Kremlin leader is serious about a ceasefire in Ukraine.

After slapping new sanctions on Russia, the US president is scrapping the idea of a US-Russia summit – and abandoning a meeting with the Kremlin leader.

He told reporters aboard Air Force One as he headed to Asia: ‘I am going to have to know that we are going to make a deal. I’m not going to be wasting my time.

‘I’ve always had a great relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing.’

An intended summit in Budapest between the presidents was to take place in the coming weeks, but was put on hold on Wednesday.
