ROY, Wash. — A Halloween trick-or-treat event at McKenna Park turned tragic this afternoon when a large tree fell onto event booths, killing one person and trapping several others beneath the debris.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, emergency responders received the call at 1:02 PM on Saturday. The incident occurred during a community Halloween celebration that was attended by an estimated 40 to 80 people.
Authorities said a 31-year-old male was killed after he was struck by one of the branches. A total of seven people were trapped under the fallen tree during extrication efforts. Six people were injured in the incident, with three transported to the hospital and three treated at the scene.
