US--POLICE OFFICER-MISCONDUCT CHARGE
New Jersey officer stopped at ATM and pizzeria instead of investigating double-murder
SUMMARY: A New Jersey officer has been charged with misconduct after prosecutors say he didn’t quickly respond to and properly investigate reports of a shooting that turned out to be a double murder. Prosecutors say Franklin Township Police Sergeant Kevin Bollaro had been the on-duty officer on the evening of Aug. 1, when police received 911 calls reporting gunshots and screaming in Pittstown. But rather than responding immediately, prosecutors say he drove to an ATM. They also say during the time he claimed to be investigating the shooting, the officer was already on route to a pizzeria.

Judge rules immigration detention of Chicago man with daughter battling cancer is illegal
SUMMARY: A federal judge has ruled that the detention of a Chicago man by immigration authorities is illegal. Ruben Torres Maldonado, whose 16-year-old daughter has a rare and advanced form of cancer, must get a bond hearing by Oct. 31. Torres was detained Oct. 18, and his attorneys are seeking his release. The judge said Friday the detention violates due process rights. But he said he couldn’t order an immediate release. Torres’ attorney sees this ruling as a win. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security alleges Torres has been living illegally in the U.S. for years. His daughter’s treatment was interrupted because of the stress of his arrest.

US--TRUMP-CANADA
Trump threatens Canada with 10% extra import tax for not pulling down anti-tariffs ad sooner
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says he plans to hike tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10% because of an anti-tariff television ad aired by the province of Ontario. The ad used the words of former President Ronald Reagan to criticize U.S. tariffs, angering Trump who said he would end trade talks with Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pull the ad after the weekend, and it ran during the first game of the World Series. Trump said on Saturday he should have pulled it sooner. Trump posted the news on his Truth Social platform as he flew aboard Air Force One to Malaysia.

EU-REL--VATICAN-LATIN MASS
American cardinal celebrates old Latin Mass in St. Peter’s in a sign of change
SUMMARY: A top American cardinal has celebrated a traditional Latin Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica with the explicit permission of Pope Leo XIV. Thousands of pilgrims packed the back altar of the basilica to a standing room-only capacity. They are rejoicing after Pope Leo XIV explicitly approved the celebration. Pope Francis had restricted the Latin Mass in 2021, citing division within the church. Traditionalists are hopeful Leo will allow more parishes to offer the traditional liturgy. The latest rounds in the liturgy wars date back to the Second Vatican Council, the 1960s meetings that modernized the church. Among the reforms was the celebration of the Mass in the vernacular, rather than Latin.
