Tropical Storm Melissa has matured into a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (mph), according to the National Weather Service's (NWS) 5 p.m. forecast . And it's likely beginning a period of rapid intensification.

By Sunday morning, Melissa will probably be a major hurricane with wind speeds at 111 mph or greater.

Melissa marks the 13th named storm of the 2025 North Atlantic hurricane season. While persistent wind shear, dry air and the influence of nearby hurricanes have so far granted the East Coast an eerily quiet passage through hurricane season from June 1 to Nov. 30, it doesn't mean it has been calm in the Atlantic.
