LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -Michigan State Police held events throughout the state Saturday for National Drug Takeback Day, allowing residents to drop off unused prescription drugs.

National Drug Takeback Day happens twice a year. The program allows people to dispose of unused and unwanted prescription drugs responsibly so that children, pets, and anyone at risk of addiction cannot access them.

Sgt. Ryan Dunlap with the Michigan State Police said the event addresses important safety concerns.

“A lot of our drugs that are opiates or benzodiazepines have addictive qualities to them,” Dunlap said. “And you just don’t want high quantities of drugs in people’s houses where they can fall under the wrong hands, of juveniles or people that may subject them to abuse.”
