A 56-year-old man has been charged with murder over the alleged stabbing of a woman in Western Australia's far north.

Police allege the woman was stabbed multiple times with a knife at an address on Frederick Street in Broome on Friday evening.

The 58-year-old woman was rushed to hospital but died from her injuries.

In a statement, police said they "believe the incident is family violence related".

"It will be alleged a verbal altercation occurred between the two individuals inside the residence before the man stabbed the woman several times with a knife," a police spokesperson said.

"It is believed the incident occurred minutes prior to emergency services arrival."

The man was arrested nearby a short time later, with Homicide Squad detectives arriving in Broome on Saturday.
