A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of south-east Queensland with the risk of heavy rainfall, large hailstone and damaging wind gusts.

The weather bureau has warned residents in south-eastern areas to prepare for destructive winds, heavy rainfall and potentially giant hailstones.

Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury says storm activity is expected to continue for the rest of the day.

"At the moment we may see these storms impacting areas around Brisbane, the Gold Coast, pushing back across the Lockyer Valley and into the sort of Western Downs as well," Ms Bradbury said.

"These storms are moving east, but may potentially produce some severe weather through those south-eastern areas over the coming hours.
