Are the Jacksonville Jaguars gearing up for the biggest move of the NFL trade deadline? According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, Jacksonville has opened trade discussions for sophomore wideout Brian Thomas Jr., per her sources.
While she says it is unlikely the Jags will unload their current top receiver, the internal discussion and the willingness to let teams field their best offer do open the door to a massive move two weeks before the deadline. Thomas Jr. is coming off a magnificent first season in the NFL, pulling in 10 touchdowns to go along with 1,282 yards. He finished fourth in Offensive Rookie of the Year honors to winner Jayden Daniels, with the most votes of any wide receiver of his draft class.
Thomas Jr.’s second year has not been nearly as successful as his first through the first third of the season, struggling to continue his performance from his inaugural season. Through seven games, he has only a single receiving touchdown to go along with 365 yards. Although he ranks 11th out of all wideouts in the league in terms of receptions, he’s been the worst when it comes to converting those chances. Several times this season, he’s dropped must-catch passes for a player in his role, completely derailing Jacksonville drives or denying a touchdown for his team.
If Thomas Jr. were to become fully available, look for teams in the AFC East like the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots to make significant strides to bring him into the fold. A move like this for either team could be the extra piece needed to best the other in the race for the division title.
