British travellers heading to the Balearic Islands next summer could face a hike in tourist tax, a trade union has warned.

The current tourist tax could be increased to €15 a day (approximately £13.08), a major trade union the CCOO has proposed. This would cover popular holiday destinations Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca .

It would apply for stays during July and August, the peak period for visitors on the Mediterranean islands.

At the moment the tourist tax in the Balearic Islands stands at €0.50 and €4 a day (approximately £0.44 and £3.49). The amount of tax paid depends on whether tourists visit during the peak or low season, and the type of accommodation they stay in, the Mirror reports.
