Two hundred years ago today, what Thomas Jefferson had called “a little short of madness” became a modern wonder.

The Erie Canal was officially declared completed and was opened by Gov. DeWitt Clinton. He led a flotilla of canal craft from Buffalo to New York City, carrying casks of Lake Erie water to be “married” with waters of the Atlantic.
