Shane Beamer made sure he, his quarterback and his offensive coordinator were on the same page in the final seconds of South Carolina’s 29-22 defeat to No. 4 Alabama.
The Gamecocks coach said his defenders were told to let Alabama score if it got the first down, so they did.
“When they broke the run at the end we let them score, so we could get the ball back,” Beamer explained Saturday night. “I went up to (quarterback LaNorris) Sellers and I told him, ‘Look, we just let them score, so you get an opportunity to go win this thing.’
“That’s not what happened, and, when it was 22-all, I told (offensive coordinator) Mike (Shula) on the headphones, in my mind, we have the best player in the stadium today, let’s let him go win it.
“We weren’t quite able to do that.”
