Martin Kemp, the 65-year-old Spandau Ballet singer, has spoken out following a serious chainsaw accident that took place on 17 October. The incident raised concerns for his safety, particularly from his son, Roman Kemp, who shared details on his podcast.
On 25 October, Martin addressed his fans on Instagram, stating, "Hi guys, just a little message… You might have seen in the paper that I had a terrible accident with a chainsaw, which I did, but it was last week. I'm a lot better now, and just to let you know, if you were worried and you are going to Lincoln Cathedral tonight for the DJ gig, it is still on, but I appreciate your concerns. Listen, it's getting better by the minute. I will explain how it happened another time, but just to reassure you, I am alright. Lots of love, bye."
His message prompted an outpouring of support from fans, with many expressing relief at his recovery. Comments included, "Happy to hear you're getting better. Take care," and "That could have been nasty, glad you are ok."
Roman Kemp, who co-hosts the podcast "You About?" with Tom Grennan, recounted the incident on 21 October. He revealed that Martin had sent a picture of his injured hand, heavily bandaged, with a simple message in the family WhatsApp group: "Yep...Chainsaw!!!" Roman expressed his concern, questioning why his father was using a chainsaw at his age, suggesting he should hire a professional instead.
Roman explained, "He goes: 'Oh, there was a bit of a branch that we wanted chopping down, so I went and got a chainsaw.'" He further clarified that Martin had picked up the chainsaw by the blade, stating he was "lucky" not to have suffered more severe injuries.
Despite the accident, Martin was back to work within 24 hours. He performed at the De Valence Pavilion in Tenby on 18 October, where fans noticed his bandaged hand. Comments from attendees included, "Hope the hand is feeling better today, Martin," and "Chainsaw 1 v Martin 0. Rest up that hand – see you next weekend."
As Martin continues to recover, he has reassured fans that he is on the mend and grateful for their support during this challenging time.
