Colorado Parks and Wildlife is taking the first steps toward managing wild bison, with a focus on creating a management plan for any animals that take up residence in the Book Cliffs due to its proximity to a herd across the Utah line.
Agency staff presented initial proposed bison regulations to the Parks and Wildlife Commission this month, and the plan is for the commission to adopt them in November.
Parks and Wildlife is moving to implement a law passed earlier this year that classifies bison in the state as big game wildlife or domestic bison, such as privately owned ones. The new classification takes place Jan. 1.
