More than 100 firefighters are battling a large fire at a rubbish tip in Sydney's south-west.

Crews and more than a dozen trucks are currently at a waste transfer facility on Barrow Road in Spring Farm, near Camden, which was first reported about 11.30am. 

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the flames were situated at a 100-metre-long and 40-metre-high shed that contains several waste products for processing.

"We do have it contained, however, it is going to smoulder for some time," he said. 

"The information we have using thermal image cameras is the fire is burning in a pit, which is extremely difficult.

"There is a fair bit of smoke around, but it is in a pretty isolated area, to the south and east of the residents."
