BOSTON (WWLP) - A former Stoughton police officer already facing federal murder charges has been indicted again, this time accused of causing the death of his victim's unborn baby.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 39-year-old Matthew Farwell of Easton has been charged with one count of causing the death of the unborn child of Sandra Birchmore, a pregnant woman he was accused of killing in 2021.

Farwell, who was arrested and charged in August 2024, remains in federal custody and will be arraigned on the new charge at a later date.

According to the superseding indictment, on or about February 1, 2021, Farwell allegedly killed Birchmore by strangulation. Prosecutors say he then staged her body and apartment to make it appear as though she had died by suicide.
