LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The South Texas Food Bank (STFB) is requesting donations and volunteer support, as many Laredo families who rely on food stamps could soon find themselves without food assistance due to the ongoing federal government standstill.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients are expected to see a halt in benefits starting November 1, with no agreement in place in Washington. The STFB said it is preparing for an influx of people as demand continues to grow and supplies begin to dwindle.

Families in Laredo are among the 42 million people who rely on SNAP, previously known as food stamps. With the program expected to end until the government reopens, the STFB said it is expecting challenges ahead.
