California has filed its 45th lawsuit against the Trump administration, joining 25 states in suing the U.S. Department of Agriculture for halting funding to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the ongoing government shutdown. State leaders say more than five million Californians could lose CalFresh benefits next month. Attorney General Rob Bonta argues the USDA has $6 billion in contingency funds it is legally obligated to use, while the agency insists those funds aren’t currently available. Governor Gavin Newsom has directed $80 million to food banks as temporary relief but says it can’t replace the $1.1 billion in monthly federal aid.
