PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Penguins, 3-2, in a shootout at Xfinity Mobile Arena. But the story was what happened in overtime.
The Penguins were trying to do something they had never done before in this bitter rivalry, winning here in Philadelphia when they trailed after two periods. And Sidney Crosby scored midway through the third period to send the game into overtime.
The Flyers won in a shootout after a wild overtime that saw two goals overturned.
The Penguins appeared to win the game early in overtime but the goal was waved off after Evgeni Malkin jumped on the ice early as Pittsburgh tried to pull its goalie on a delayed penalty. Malkin was the one who put the would-be winner past Flyers goalie Samuel Ersson.
