New Mexico's two U.S. senators continued to point a finger of blame Tuesday at President Donald Trump and Republicans over a weekslong government shutdown that threatens to freeze critical federal food benefits Saturday.

Republicans pointed the finger back, saying Democrats like U.S. Sens. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján are to blame for failing to support a GOP-led bill to keep the federal government funded through Nov. 21.

"Sen. Luján and Sen. Martin Heinrich are using you — yes, you — as political pawns in their game of the Democrat shutdown of our federal government," Senate Minority Leader Bill Sharer of Farmington said in a video recorded outside Luján's Santa Fe office.
