To no one’s surprise, private schools are losing pupils since the VAT on fees . According to a recently published Independent Schools Council (ISC) survey of 1,150 schools, 81 schools in the UK have closed since July 2024 and nearly 17,000 pupils have left the sector .
What is less expected is that girls’ schools are haemorrhaging pupils at a far faster rate than boys’ schools or co-ed schools. In fact, it’s the boys’ only schools that are faring the least worst, losing 2.7 per cent of their pupils compared to 4.5 per cent among the girls.
