Calvin Morgan remembers what it’s like to clear the gutters in anticipation of a hurricane.
But now that he’s living in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, he has to watch and listen from a distance as his parents do the same in Mandeville, Jamaica.
The country is in the direct path of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 with sustained winds roaring at 280 km/h and gusting to 320 km/h on Tuesday. Live cameras showed an island of empty streets, some of which were flooded early in the day.
“It's a scary time right now,” Morgan said in an interview with CBC Radio’s .
His parents prepared for the worst, laying bricks around their property to control the flow of water at least a little bit.
“To know that I'm not there at this time … it’s hard,” said Morgan.
