Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for low-income families has run out due to the ongoing government shutdown, and November's benefits will not be paid out unless the shutdown is lifted.

That means about 140,000 Rhode Islanders won't receive their benefits, which were previously called food stamps, on Nov. 1. In Rhode Island, the average monthly benefit amount per household member is $199.

Gov. Dan McKee has declared a state of emergency over the impending crisis and local food banks are bracing for a surge in demand. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha has also joined a coalition of 22 other attorneys general across the country to file a federal lawsuit to keep benefits flowing.
