Australians are being urged to do a simple thing and pocket their share of more than $19bn from the tax man.

Fresh figures released by the ATO shows a little over seven million superannuation members have lost or unclaimed super.

According to the ATO, the average amount is $2590, which could grow to tens of thousands by retirement.

When added together, Australians could pocket more than $19bn in unclaimed super.

Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino is encouraging people to log onto the ATO website and check if they have any lost and unclaimed super.

“What this can mean is that people can find themselves paying multiple fees, which will obviously have a bad effect on people’s end balances,” he said.
