DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) — Four inmates at the Bristol County Jail and House of Correction have graduated from the commercial driver’s license (CDL) program.
According to Sheriff Paul Heroux, three inmates graduated in October, and another inmate graduated earlier this year.
Jobs with a CDL include, but are not limited to, driving trash trucks, snowplow drivers, heavy equipment operators, local delivery truck drivers, and long-haul truck drivers.
Former Sheriff Tom Hodgson learned about the program and secured $100,000 in grant money to fund the program and a large simulator for inmates to virtually get behind the wheel of a big rig.
However, after inmates were released, they wouldn't continue with CDL training. Heroux said the jail now helps inmates schedule their permit and road tests
