DULUTH — Like many other Duluthians, John Crowley was watching Monday Night Football on WDIO-TV when news broke that the Edmund Fitzgerald was missing.

"I don't remember who won," remembered Crowley, half a century later.

The Kansas City Chiefs eked out a 34-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in a Nov. 10, 1975, game that was locally interrupted by news anchor Dennis Anderson telling viewers that the Edmund Fitzgerald was believed to have sunk at the other end of Lake Superior.

Crowley was at the Sand Bar, a Canal Park watering hole in a building that is now part of Grandma's Saloon & Grill. He was watching the game with some of his fellow crew members from the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Woodrush, then stationed in Duluth.
