Anderson Cooper lost his dad Wyatt Cooper, at age 10, and his brother Carter at 21. Cooper's mother Gloria Vanderbilt also died, six years ago.
But the 58-year-old CNN news anchor regularly honors their memory on his grief podcast "All There Is," which he premiered three years ago. It's now turning into a weekly year-round endeavor with an accompanying weekly live show airing Thursday nights (9:15 ET on CNN). Expect Cooper to talk with not just celebrities – upcoming guests include Luke Bryan, Mariska Hargitay and Charlamagne tha God – but podcast listeners and viewers, too, who regularly call in to a voicemail box and share their grief stories with him.
"Listening to these messages, you hear every permutation of grief there is," he says over a video call from his New York CNN office.
Outside of the podcast, Cooper connects with his past by watching movies. Some he watches over and over again. One of them, that he rewatched recently? Harrison Ford's 1982 "Blade Runner," from director Ridley Scott.
It stars Ford as Rick Deckard, an ex-cop in Los Angeles circa 2019 whose job as a blade runner was to hunt down bioengineered androids called replicants. Deckard is brought back into the fold to "retire" four replicants that have gone rogue, and he falls for a replicant named Rachael (Sean Young) who believes she's human.
"There's something comforting to me in returning to these things," Cooper says, "which I watched as a kid, and I don't even know really what it is. It's not like 'Blade Runner' is a very emotional movie. It's not like, you know, 'Terms of Endearment,' and I'm weeping or anything. But it's an echo of my past and an echo of my brother."
