The New York Giants lost star rookie running back Cam Skattebo to a season-ending ankle injury in their Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The injury occurred when Jaxson Dart tried to complete a pass to Skattebo over the middle of the field. Eagles linebacker Zack Baun ran over to tackle the rookie running back as he attempted to make the catch, and Skattebo's right leg got awkwardly pinned under him during the play.
Skattebo's right foot was facing the wrong direction after Baun rolled off him, which prompted the 23-year-old to receive immediate medical attention on the field.
Skattebo was carted off shortly after the injury occurred. He was wearing an air cast on his right leg.
Skattebo was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and later had emergency surgery to repair the injury he suffered.
Here's what to know about the full extent of Skattebo's injury and when he might return to the field for the Giants.
Cam Skattebo injury update
Skattebo suffered an ankle dislocation when Baun tackled it. It was of the open variety, meaning there was an open wound over his ankle joint in association with the injury.
In addition to the ankle injury, Skattebo also suffered a fibula fracture and a deltoid ligament rupture, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Skattebo thus far has had emergency surgery to close the wound created by the ankle dislocation. Rapoport reports the surgery was "a success" while Giants coach Brian Daboll said "all went well" with the procedure.
It isn't yet clear whether Skattebo will require additional surgeries to repair his injuries.
Is Cam Skattebo out for the season?
Yes, Skattebo will miss the rest of the 2025 NFL season because of his injury. The Giants placed him on Injured Reserve (IR) on Oct. 28, and he will not be designated to return at any point during his rookie season.
When will Cam Skattebo return?
Rapoport reports Skattebo's injury should come with a 4-6 month recovery time. As such, the Giants expect Skattebo to be back for the start of the team's offseason program, including OTAs and minicamp.
That should position the Arizona State product to be able to return to the field for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season.
