Hurricane Melissa battered Jamaica with 185 mph winds—among the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record—leaving at least one dead and widespread destruction.

The Category 2 storm crosses Cuba with 105 mph winds, with hundreds of thousands evacuated as it threatens the Bahamas, Bermuda and Haiti.

Melissa has killed at least seven across the Caribbean, left more than 500,000 Jamaicans without power, damaged hospitals and threatens Cuba’s economic crisis.

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba — Hurricane Melissa was grinding across Cuba on Wednesday as a Category 2 storm after pummeling Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
