Maintenance crews working on graffiti cleanup and pothole repair will close lanes and require rolling slowdowns on Portland-area highways 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. Drivers will need to add extra time into trips during the slowdowns.

Scheduled slowdowns will hit both directions of Interstate 5 and Interstate 405 early in the day, as well as Interstate 205 and Interstate 84 later in the morning and into the afternoon. There are also slowdowns planned for OR 217 in the Beaverton area.

What is a rolling slowdown? Oregon Department of Transportation vehicles will line up across all lanes of a highway/freeway to pace and block traffic in certain areas.

The blocking vehicles proceed at a slow, consistent speed, which causes traffic behind them to slow down to match their speed.
