"Sing the 50 United States!" is the latest posthumous Ted Geisel manuscript, coming out summer 2026.

A new Dr. Seuss book? No, we haven’t landed in Whoville – a never-before-seen Ted Geisel story will be published next summer.

“Sing the 50 United States!” was discovered in the archives of UC San Diego's Geisel Library and features the Cat in the Hat and two Little Cat helpers teaching the names of all fifty states. Random House Children’s Books will publish a first round of 500,000 copies on June 2, 2026.

It’s the first full posthumous manuscript discovered since “What Pet Should I Get?” was uncovered in 2015, according to a press release from the publisher. Geisel died in 1991. The last book he published during his life was “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”, one of his most beloved titles.

New Dr. Seuss book coming June 2026

This new Seuss book includes excerpts and a cover sketch from Geisel’s manuscript. Geisel left behind notes on the overall art direction, taken over in his signature style by children’s book artist Tom Brannon.

“To sing the 50 United States, you have to use your brain. Massachusetts. Minnesota. Missouri and Montana. M-i-s-s-Mississippi. Maryland! Michigan and Maine!” reads a page of the book’s rhymes.

“Sing the 50 United States!” also coincides with the nation’s 250th anniversary. Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Random House Children’s Books and nonprofit First Book are celebrating in style with a “backpack build” program in classrooms across the country, giving participating students a copy of the book, other Seuss classics and essential school supplies.

“Uncovering a new work from Ted is like finding a time capsule of his imagination,” said Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, in a statement. “‘Sing the 50 United States!’ celebrates his boundless creativity, genius with words, and enduring ability to inspire young readers everywhere. We’re honored to share this new Dr. Seuss treasure with readers across America during such a meaningful milestone year.”
