OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. is announcing a city-led non-perishable food drive as the federal government shutdown continues.

Ewing's office said the food drive will help address the pending stoppage of federal food assistance.

What to know:

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services confirmed it will pause Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture notified the state that federally funded SNAP benefits for November will be delayed if the shutdown continues. DHHS CEO Steve Corsi says the agency has a plan in place to "immediately" begin working with the USDA to get benefits to Nebraskans as soon as possible when the shutdown ends.
