JJ Spaun had the kind of season most golfers dream about.

The PGA Tour pro conquered the US Open in a rain-soaked Oakmont course. He almost won two more titles in the playoffs (the Players Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship), and he finished second in the Ryder Cup standings, earning an automatic spot on Team USA.

But when the matches started at Bethpage Black last month, Spaun wasn't in any of the first four groups. Many fans, analysts were confused by that decision, and the major winner even admitted to being a little surprised, too.
